Alterations and Additions to an 1890s Worker’s Cottage
2022
A two storey contemporary addition to a heritage listed Worker’s Cottage.
The original cottage was reconfigured to include the master suite, library and laundry. A ground floor living pavilion was added, which connects to the existing olive tree and pool in the backyard. The upper level contained the children’s bedrooms, games room and bathroom. The new garage is a multipurpose space, which doubles as an entertaining room connecting to the street.
The second storey extension has been pushed away from the facade of the existing building and overhangs the new ground floor to provide shading to the lower level. The ground floor is a brick ‘plinth’ with the lighter second storey structure floating above. The materials are intended to be honest and natural to create a feeling of warmth and connection to nature.
